Too pretty, and she can’t speak Yorkshire: Fans hit out at Anne Hathaway's accent in new film
By Chris Hastings
Yorkshire lass: Anne Hathaway as Emma Morley in the film One Day
She was criticised for being just too pretty to take the lead role in the film version of the bestselling book One Day – now fans say Anne Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent is ‘horrible’.
The American star’s attempts at Northern tones as the character Emma Morley have also been called ‘awkward’ and ‘uncomfortable’.
A fan calling herself Britishchick wrote on one website: ‘Not good at all!!!! Totally inconsistent! Why not get an actual English woman in the role.’ Another simply added: ‘Love the book. Hate Anne’s accent.’
One Day, which will be released on August 19, is among the most eagerly awaited films of the year. Based on the runaway bestseller by David Nicholls, the film charts the ever-changing on-off relationship between Morley, a working-class girl from Yorkshire, and wealthy Dexter Mayhew, played by Jim Sturgess.
The couple first meet while students at Edinburgh University and the book catches up with them on the same day each year – July 15 – over the ensuing two decades.
Experts believe the movie will be one of the biggest hits of the year thanks to the success of the novel, which has sold more than 860,000 copies in the UK alone.
But some fans remain unconvinced about the casting of The Devil Wears Prada star in the pivotal role – indeed, originally some thought she was ‘too pretty’ to play the part of the fast-food waitress who becomes a comprehensive school teacher.
Later, the 28-year-old actress from Brooklyn, New York, admitted she was apprehensive about getting the voice right. She said: ‘I was very nervous about the Yorkshire accent.’
Now the film’s trailer has confirmed the fans’ worst fears.
One wrote: ‘There’s nothing Yorkshire about Anne Hathaway’s accent.’ Another added: ‘It sounds a generic posh English accent.’
But a film critic who has already seen the movie said that fans should not judge it by the trailer.
The reviewer said: ‘Anne has a go at the Yorkshire accent. Her attempt has its high points and its low points. But to be honest it didn’t worry me. I thought the film was a very good and a very faithful adaptation.’

The cat's back! First official picture of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises released
By SARAH BULL and MIKE LARKIN
Going hell for leather: The first official photo of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises has now been released
Batman bosses have kept fans guessing with how Anne Hathaway is going to portray Catwoman in upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises.
And now, with the first official photo of the actress in character, it seems Catwoman is going to be tougher than ever in the sequel.
While Hathaway's outfit can't really be seen, it appears the 28-year-old actress is wearing a black leather catsuit, with a zip up the front, teamed with a pair of black goggles and lashings of red lipstick.
Don't mess with her: Anne looks like a lean mean machine as she rides a futuristic motorbike
The shot shows Catwoman on a motorbike, which looks very similar to the one owned by Batman in the last film, The Dark Knight Rises.
Very little information has been revealed about the storyline of the new film, in which Hathaway stars as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman.
However, a source recently told Hollywoodlife.com of Anne's Catwoman costume: 'Anne's outfit is more tactical, like the comic book, than the previous Batman movies.
Heads down: Bodies fall to the floor as Anne whizzes around on her extraordinary vehicle
Previous incarnations: Halle Berry as Catwoman in the 2004 film and Michelle Pfeiffer in the role in 1992 movie Batman Returns
'She will definitely be wearing the goggles, and it's going to be less sexy than Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman costumes. She's going to look more like a robber.'
Hathaway was yesterday spotted on the set of the new film, showing off her legs in a pair of tiny black shorts.
Anne, who was wearing heavy make-up, chatted with a member of the production staff while she stretched her legs during a spot of down time.
Clawfully good-looking: Hathaway showed off the wonderful form that landed her the part of Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises during filming in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Caught in the act: Marion Cotillard is snapped as she takes part in a scene for the upcoming film
Prepations: A stuntman was seen on Catwoman's bike on the set earlier in the day
Although the ladies on set provided the glamour, it was the stunt men who generated the excitement.
One was seen shooting down a set of stairs in a exotically-designed motorbike during one of the more thrilling moments of the day.
The Dark Knight Rises also stars Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine and is set to be released in July 2012.

A purr-fect pair of pins! Catwoman star Anne Hathaway shows off her amazing legs on set of The Dark Knight Rises
By MIKE LARKIN
Clawfully good-looking: Anne Hathaway showed off the wonderful form that landed her the part of Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises during filming in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
It looks like glamorous Anne Hathaway is definitely the top cat on the set of The Dark Knight Rises.
The actress showed off her perfect legs as she prowled around in a tiny pair of sports shorts between takes.
And the star, who is playing Catwoman in next year's most hotly-tipped blockbuster, definitely did not look like she was overindulging in the cream as she looked in tip-top shape.
Vested interest: Anne showed off the toned body she sculpted for the part in a tight-fitting black top
Anne, who was wearing heavy make-up, she chatted with a member of the production staff while she stretched her legs during a spot of down time.
It looks like the Oscars hostess has been working hard to get in shape for her role as high-kicking thief Selena Kyle in the final part of Christopher Nolan's hit trilogy.
Whisker away: An assistant takes Anne to her next destination during a hectic day of blockbuster movie-making
A source told the Mail: 'Anne is working out five days a week. She's taking it very seriously and wants her body in tip-top condition.
'Secretly she hopes to upstage Halle Berry, who last played Catwoman.
'She's doing dance classes, weight-training and cardio - she wants to be the sexiest Catwoman ever.'
Cot in the act: Marion Cotillard is snapped as she takes part in a scene for the upcoming film
She is playing Miranda Tate in the film, an ally of Bruce Wayne's who works on the board of his company.

Aerodynamically viable? Whether such a bike would ever pass as road worthy is anyone's guess but it looked good on film

Anne Hathaway Will Break Your Face
Beware stuntmen of Hollywood. Anne Hathaway is not so demure as she looks. Anne has been hard at work training for the role of Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third Batmanmovie, and she's been playing rough with her sparring partners.
British newspaper The Sun reports that while she was working out a fight scene, Anne accidentally gave a stuntman a black eye.
"Anne got a bit carried away during a fight scene and mistakenly shoved the butt of the gun right into the actor's eye socket," an unnamed source told the paper. "He came away with a massive black eye. Anne was mortified."
According to the source, Anne made amends by presenting the poor guy with a silver pen inscribed with the words, "Remember no one packs a punch like Anne." We're sure he won't forget.

Zwick’s overcompensation, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway, biopics in disguise, Love & Other Drugs
I often feel out of the loop when it comes to certain fads, films or actors but few make me more perplexed than Hathaway, whose appeal I’m constantly try to extrapolate. So, it’s not surprising that I entered Love & Other Drugs with a sense of trepidation a bit disconcerted about a potentially schmaltzy love fest with her. Something about Love & Other Drugs just sort of ticked me off from the inception. From a very pop-ish opening sequence to the token dinner with the quirky (but brilliant) family where our protagonist is (but of course) the black seep of the family just plays a bit too on the nose, making me want to get up and slap Edward Zwick. Jamie is a typical manwhore who takes up the glamorous (insert sarcasm) job of selling prescription drugs and who happens to fall for a woman with early Parkinson’s – Maggie, and that’s essentially what Love & Other Drugs is about. The thing is, Jake is handling it all wonderfully – but that feeling of overcompensation is difficult to shake off – especially when Hathaway enters the film in typical eccentric fashion for an annoyingly cloying meet-cute, and then somewhere between that the film takes a turn for the better. Zwick is still trying too hard, the nudity which isn’t gratuitous but just screams “90s youth”.
Hathaway and Gyllenhaal are remarkable together, and even the writing – for some time at least – still overly precise but getting more hits than misses this time around. It’s not difficult to pinpoint what makes me interested in Hathaway’s work here. It’s not the best thing she’s done – even if I’m on the Rosemarie DeWitt bandwagon I’ll accede that she’s fine in Rachel Getting Married; but as Maggie I’m finally able to see what’s winsome about her without actor-ly tics or overemphasised movements. Even her previous comedic work I’m never willing to believe there’s anything (authentically) charming about her, but she really is just the sweetest thing here. Yes, she’s getting by on what seems to be just her natural charm but that’s precisely what works about the entire affair. It’s the sort of role that depends on someone with that sort of winsome air to – and Zwick’s lucky enough that the two work so well together. This makes me that much more annoyed with him when the film hits the seventy minute mark and turns into something dangerously close to a hot mess. Zwick decided to turn it into something dangerously close to a standard biopic as we watch the very noble Maggie push Jamie away because she's too wonderful to allow him the horror of caring for her in sickness. The fact that this is based on fact doesn't make him less culpable, it's the fact that Zwick approaches this so so little sincerity especially when the shift is such an about-face from his crazy antics earlier.
The only reason that the middle portion of Love & Other Drugs manages to work is because Zwick doesn’t seem too interested in making a grand statement about life, or preaching to when his entire technique questionable. However, it turns out that his overreaching arc is just an attempt to make a judgement on Jamie’s life. It was as if Zwick, with his palpable “youth-friendly” appeal just this side of hip was intent on making his Jamie that sort of slightly jerk-y cool guy that we’re forced to love, and it immediately reminded me of Boyle’s ADD direction in 127 Hours. Both directors want to have it both ways, we’re supposed to love this guy but concede that he’s offensive. In the battle of male leads, though, Zwick’s approaches prevails because he’s willing to prevent his flawed antihero as a flawed antihero, and even if he ends up glorifying him in the end that’s less a judgement on his direction and more a question for human psychology. But, as the film meanders to its end Love & Other Drugs becomes more and more cringe worthy, never quite descending to absolute terribleness but still ultimately off-putting. Although, I suppose my jadedness prevents me from deferring to the simplicity of it all, the fact that Zwick never decides what he wants hs film to be opting to jump around like a psycho irresolute novice - which he is not - is neither comforting nor original, though I think he thinks so - though I'll admit, there were times he had me more than a little interested, shame he couldn't keep it up.

Movie Meme, Day 11: A Movie That Disappointed
One good thing about the meme is how cathartic it is. I’ve been wanting to write about some films for some time, but I’m not sure how to get the ball rolling. Biting the bullet; for today: Rachel Getting Married. I never reviewed Rachel Getting Married, since I wasn’t blogging around the time of its release. It’s often touted as one of the strongest independent flicks of 2008 and Anne Hathaway’s performance continues to be hailed as a tour-de-force. I saw it in the wake of the buzz it was getting. While recapping 2008 I mentioned that I was no fan of the film (my initial grade was a C+) and last week when I caught it on I decided to watch (E/N: this post was written weeks ago). I hadn’t seen it since 2008 and I wanted to see how it aged.
I know I praised Rosemarie DeWitt in my Encore Awards, but I was unprepared for how excellent she was here. I know that lovers of the film applaud her performance but there’s a reason that the film is called Rachel Getting Married and it’s just not because of her wedding. I’ve never liked Anne Hathaway, from her days of being a Disney princess to her newfound status as a rising star I still don’t like her. If pushed I’d identify her performance in The Devil Wears Prada as my favourite, and that doesn’t say much when I think she’s the weakest of the film’s four stars (Blunt, Streep, Tucci in that order). Hathaway grates on me so much I’m unsure if her acting is the issue or her natural personality and my unprofessionalism. Kym, the recovering addict, is the perfect type of role for an actress trying to break out of a rut but Demme’s Rachel Getting Married biggest problem is that it already thinks it doing something seismic. I recall someone saying that if some new director had helmed this, whose name was not Demme, the response would have been muted. I believe that. The film is not a bad one by any stretch of the imagination, but despite all the rote examples of honesty it’s not as sincere as it’s pretending which is the feeling I get from Hathaway. Yes, Kym is just a large mix of neuroses and Hathaway is obviously trying hard, but she strikes me as a young actress trying to act than a real character which is the opposite feeling I get from DeWitt. It’s no surprise, then, that Hathaway does best when paired with DeWitt. It’s almost as if the older sister is willing the younger one to step up to the plate, and it’s the dynamic of the film that rings out as most sincere.
Bill Irwin, I admit, puts up a valiant effort and his response to a certain dishwasher scene is well played. But I can’t take it at face value because it seems oddly truncated, not as truncated as Debra Winger who does well with a nothing role, but truncated nonetheless. I can’t be expected to value these characters because there’s little there that urges me to get invested in them. Yet, I admire Rachel Getting Married for its good intentions. Demme falters, oh yes I believe he does, but his attempt to craft an adult drama that’s not overly adult or that has too much “drama” is impressive. I laud its ability to have an interracial marriage without turning it into something of huge proportions. I laud the fact that it doesn’t try to play for sympathy too much, though it does aim for empathy that I can’t always give. Despite its best intentions Rachel Getting Married does little to move. I’ll show up for the bride, but I’m neither here nor there on the rest of the bridal party. (Upgraded to a B-).
What do you think of Rachel Getting Married?
All for the MEME.
