Trailer Parks...(or Snap Judgements)

I’m one of those weird cinephiles who’s not interested in seeking out trailers for upcoming films. The concept of trailers holds little interest for me, I don’t even watch previews of my favourite TV shows. I know I’m alone on that – and I’m fine with that, but recently the trailer infatuation has gotten kind of crazy. I know Yojimbo would agree with me on that.

I guess we can some up the point of a trailer as a way to pique the interest of viewers in a film, I’m not exactly sure who makes trailers – probably not the movie directors, which is why I don’t get why so many bloggers I see deciding NOT to see a movie because of a trailer. I don’t know, there are some movies I know I won’t see – I ended up watching the trailer for Gulliver’s Travels at Heather’s behest. I loathe Jack Black, and the trailer’s tone kind of showed that they didn’t care for Swift, I guess I’m as guilty. Still, I don’t think that trailers work as a way of telling us what to watch. Obviously, with all the movies being released every year we can’t see all and we have to decide how to choose – but I’m not sure trailers are the best way. Well, really, there’s no best way. You don’t know if it’s good (or awful) until you’ve seen it.

As it is, I’ve seen three and half trailers for 2010 films. I’ve seen the Harry Potter trailer, Rabbit Hole and The King Speech. The half is Never Let Me Go – but I saw it on mute, so it doesn’t count as a whole. The reason I watched each of those trailers is because I knew I was going to see the films anyhow. The first three were in the top 5 my official list of films to anticipate this year. I wouldn’t go watch the trailer for a movie like Winter’s Bone (I’ll be reviewing that soon) because if I didn’t like the trailer I might be moved to judge it beforehand, it’s inevitable – trailers have that effect on you. If you’re unsure about a film I think a trailer might be the worse way to decide if you’re going to see it or not.

 

Maybe I’m crazy though. Well, crazier.

I Can't Wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I explained this before: I don't watch movie trailers, well unless I'm under duress. But i figure the rules are different for TV movies. Nonethless, you know Mildred Pierce, right? Joan Crawford won her Oscar for the film? You heard about the remake with Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood? Here's the trailer.

Holy crap, this looks good. And though I still think Leighton Meester is an obvious choice to play Winslet's daughter this just looks too good. I. Can't. Wait.

It's Not Just Me!

Confession: I don't like watching movie trailers. I have no real reason, I just don't. The only trailer from last year I saw before I saw the film was Nine and Bright Star...other than that, no. If I must watch, I watch without sound - so the first trailer for any 2010 release I anticipated was a silent Never Let Me Go Trailer...of course the trailer that the internet has recently been abuzz with was that of Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows. In case you didn't know, I love these books. I know it's literary suicide to admit that (and from a Literature student, no less) but I do. I'm always saying that I'm looking forward to great things from the cast, none of them more than Rupert Grint, who I continue to maintain has a promising career ahead of him.

And I'm not the only touting Grint apparently, my favourite director Martin Scorsese has only recently pimped him HERE*. I feel validated...I mean, that probably made my month (yes the month has been going that horribly).

  
I still haven't listened to the trailer, but for those of you who actually watch trailers here it is.

I've broken down my five favourite things about it.

I almost screamed when I saw the shot above. If you read the book you know what's going on, if you haven't (what's wrong with you?) I won't spoil it. I will say, I'm so glad that that my darling HBC will get to have some fun. Yippee.

            

Perhaps it's because I too am sporting a beard, but I feel a sense of validation in seeing that the disheveled look is in. Though teen romance is not particularly poignant Grint and Watson do have great chemistry...so I'm interested to see what comes of their "romance".

           

I don't know what's going on there, but I just love that shot.
      

Confession: I love the Death Eaters. They're bad ass, they wear black and they're headed by one of the most talented Britons. What's not to love?

Another shot I love for no reason, I will miss the lack of Quidditch in the final chapters. It's grown on me...(and I will never forgive them from not giving me enough in The Goblet of Fire).

     
ONE THING I LOATHED

No matter how hard Daniel tries he cannot make this Bonnie girl a good actress (I refuse to check her last name). She's insufferable...why oh, why couldn't they have just let Harry end up with Luna? Watching The Half Blood Prince last week on reaffirmed how terrible she is...Ick.
   
I'm not the only one waiting for November...am I?

The Links Are All Right

Remember my posts a few months back about films I’m anticipating this year, well the trailer for one of the top ten is out and (naturally) it looks smashing. The Kids Are All Right will be released in July and stars the Great Annette, the lovely Julianne and the talented Mr. Ruffalo. I get so happy when I see Annette laughing. Sigh.

I think it's my favourite post this past week.

            

Anahita took a break from being studious at Oxford. She writes about a favourite film of hers, I Capture the Castle. I’m really not too fond of the piece, but Romola Garai is marvellous in it. What are your thoughts on the coming of age drama?

            

I’ve still not seen Alice in Wonderland which is making me antsy, but Jose saw it and he gave it good feedback. So I’m not as worried about seeing, just worried what The Red Queen would do if she knew she has been forsook...

What are your thoughts on Judy Holliday’s Best Actress win or Renee Zellweger’s Chicago nomination? Joe offers up his thoughts on the latter and Fritz writes on the former. I’m fond of both blondies, even though Holliday takes an edge. Why is her performance so maligned, it’s not her fault she beat out Margo Channing.

             

Simon gives us some flicks that WILL NOT BE SEEN in 2010 by her. Three of the films in my top 40 anticipated are on it, one's actually in my top ten. Yikes.

           

The extra astute Nick Davis gives Mary Pickford a horrid birthday present, but it’s still excellent reading. It makes me glad I can’t recall seeing Coquette.
