RESULTS: Hello folks, again. I realised I was just being a tad hard on Luke since he's guessed the correct answer. Each of the seven characters above was involved in a tragic love affair. Six of them were involved in a love affair where one of the parties died, and five of them died themselves. So, it's all together a rather bleak banner - but I love it nonetheless. The clue was that I said look at the characters (not the actors) but I still applaud Ryan's thinking...

Hello folks, as you can see the banner has been changed. As usual I'll let you take a guess, but it will be more diffiuclt than choosing which movie the actors are from (which is quite easy, no?). The seven characters above have something in common, tell me what it is. To narrow it down, another five of the seven have something else in common. Answer one, or both and you'll get bragging rights...and a guest post if you're desirous.

HINT: You could probably say that most of the seven took my tagline advice...So many of those characters cast off common sense...they did a lot of feeling and little thinking. Viola is moved by Will's poetry, Madame de Tourvel casts off her religion for her seducer, Cecilia petulantly (but courageously) casts off her family in the face of wisdom, Keats was the ultimate sympathetic artist, and Tony didn't think enough about the ramifications of his romance with Maria. I can't say if Katherine and Frank were thinkers or feelers though...

It's a new month, and with a new month comes a new banner. The last banner discussion had some of you foiled even though you eventually realised it was Howards End. This one is simpler - if you've seen the film, at least.  Here's the image without the words. Do you recognise the film?

Obscure Quoting Game

You know that I’m fond of these vague guessing games, so I’ve got another one for you. As you can tell from the name, it’s quote related. I think it’s difficult, but this quote has always stuck with me.

        

So I’m giving you four clues:

1) The film won a number of Oscars (but not for writing)

2) It was said by the lead actress of the film, an Oscar winner, but not for this film (though she was nominated

3) The first shot of the film is in black and white…but the rest is not

4) In the quote, the speaker is referring to a work of art

           

I think I’ve given you quite much. Here’s the quote.

The Guessing Game

When I posted that new banner for my site I just happened to solicit your guesses for the origin of the picture. Little did I know that you all would be totally clueless to the film. I'm actually smirking, because nothing pleases me more than keeping secrets (but not for long).

So,because I'm me and I like to lead you on sound off below in the comments. The winner will get bragging rights (that's really all I can give you).
       
The argument began here, so just for some hints. It is NOT Mrs. Brown, Bright Star, The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford...and it's a film from the 90s. And because I'm not completely unfeeling the film begins with all green. That's a really big hint, so happy guessing.

The Game: Revisited

I threw out an invitation for you readers to participate in a game a few days ago. It was Oscar related, slightly. You had to find the similarities betweent eight women: Ginger Rogers, Ingird Bergman, Bette Davis, Greer Garson, Vivien Leigh, Anna Magnani, Ginger Rogers, Simone Signoret. I was looking for three things, and as I expected all four of you (what about the rest of you?) got the first two, they won Best Actress Oscars. What none of you got was that they all won their Oscar over one woman in particular - Katharine Hepburn. Those eight are the eight who have foiled Kate's chances. I guess it was a tough one, but you know how my mind flits about. So that's that. Still, I do want to give out this guest post but I want to make you work for it because I'm a sadist or what not. Still, thanks to Alex, Heather, Tom, and Luke...if no one gets the other two questions one of you will get the chance, but I'm giving out two more questions. Try one or two, maybe you'll get lucky. And by the way: they're each Oscar related.

The Game

I’m throwing out a game of sorts for all you readers to participate in. I’m that playful (or so I say) but I like games. I was thinking what would be an appropriate prize. Posting prices are exorbitant (and I don’t have anything worthy to give) – but I decided on a prize (which is more of a task). Whoever wins will have the (dubious) honour of writing the first guest post on Encore’s World of Film & TV. No rules on the guest post – just something cinematic or television inspired. So here’s the task. The eight women below have something in common: three things actually, so it can be surmised in one sentence. So guess what is, and whoever’s closest to the answer (and guesses first) wins. Since sending emails can be a bitch, just comment below (so for the next few days all comments will be moderated). The Cinematography Game

The Mad Hatter just recently posted his podcast. During the enjoyable 40 minutes he spoke about five of his favourite cinematography in films. It's an interesting thought, I often think of cinematography as the most important technical element of  a film - yes, more than editing. If it's not well shot, sorry, I don't like it as much. You're probably thinking, style over substance. Perhaps. But if I were to look at my top 20 films or so: the majority have enviable cinematography. So, it got me thinking what films have my favourite cinematography. It's a tough job, and one I can't do in a day. But below are shots from ten films. They're not my absolute favourite shot films; but they're some of them. Each of these have been shot that they all look so picturesque. I'd like to live in any of them.

       

I decided not to list the names, why don't you guess? Some are simple, some are tough. Give it a go.
